KnotMeter uses your device's GPS to measure boat speed and heading, and to tag runs with a place name and the country you're in. With your permission it can use location in the background so it keeps measuring while your phone is stowed or the screen is off.
To work, coordinates are sent to Apple (maps & reverse‑geocoding — used to detect water vs. land/road and to name your location) and to Open‑Meteo (to fetch wind for your position). We do not store your location on our own servers.
The app reads device motion (accelerometer) to show a live G‑force meter. This data stays on your device.
If you use Sign in with Apple, the name and email Apple provides are used to create your in‑app account. Your usertag, boats (brand, model, length, engine, fuel, and an optional photo) and saved runs are stored in your private iCloud account via Apple CloudKit, so they sync across your devices. We cannot access your private iCloud data.
When you add a boat to the leaderboard, the following becomes visible to other KnotMeter users: your usertag, boat details and photo, top speed, the country you recorded it in, and the date. Please don't put anything private in those fields. You can remove your entries at any time with Remove this boat from leaderboard or Clear whole leaderboard.
KnotMeter does not use third‑party analytics SDKs or sell your data to data brokers.
KnotMeter is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their personal data.
Speeds are GPS estimates for fun and are not certified. Always operate your boat safely and lawfully, and don't interact with the app while driving.
We may update this policy; the "last updated" date above will change. Continued use of the app means you accept the current version.
